How does Napoleon use his power to control the animals?

Napoleon is now the most powerful animal in 'Animal Farm'. He is the leader of the animals and he controls them too. He uses many different ways to control them for example: propaganda, intimidation, lies and intelligence.

Napoleon takes advantage of the animal's ignorance and lack of memory. He uses propaganda by Squealer. All the animals listen to Squealer when he spreads Napoleon's ideas all around the farm. He uses persuasive techniques and constantly reminds the animals how bad Mr.Jones treated them. Napoleon is able to use propaganda effectively because of his intelligence and the power he has over the other animals.

Napoleon also uses intimidation. He is always reguarded by nine dogs who protect and defend him. Whenever any animal wants to complain about injustices or something like that, immediately one of the dogs begin to growl and the animals feel intimidated and scared about that so they stay silent without finishing with what they wanted to say. "The four young pigs who had protested when Napoleon abolished the Meetings raised their voices timidly, but they were promptly silenced by a tremendous growling from the dogs" p.47

Horrible Humans break "Animal Farm's" peace
By: Fiorella Villegas

Two days ago in the now called "Animal Farm" a battle took place between the humans beasts and the animals. This memorable battle has been named "The Battle of the Cowshed", in this battle there were two terrible deaths.

Mr. Jones and his workers forcibly entered the farm to try to recover it, but they couldn't because os Snowball's incredible plan. As soon as the pig knew about the attack he made a quick and very efficient plan to keep the control of the farm, and they did. The animals had a great victory but unfortunately they lost one comrade, a very brave and honorable ship was lost in battle.

Animals ready to attack
A also very brave comrade is Boxer, which we can call our hero. He defend the farm with all his body and soul. He killed a human with his iron shoes, he had no intention to do it. "He is dead," said boxer sorrowfully. "I had no intention of doing that. I forgot i was wearing iron shoes" As we can see, he is really sorry for what have happened but what is done, its done and we cant change anything.

We had the opportunity talk to the expert in military techniques General Huez and we asked him what he thinks about the intelligence of Snowball. "I am very surprised and shocked with this pig" said Huez amazed, "I have never seen something like this before, and I would like to see that pig in person.". We also asked him about his position in the rebellion. " I am a human and i have to support my race, but i also think that animals have to figth for their rights." that was his final argument.

Animal Farm in 2013

In Animal Farm chapters 2,3 and 4 allegory is clearly represented. In chapter two Old Major's death is an allegory to Lenin's death, the main leader of the rusian revolution. After his death there are elections to find out the next leader wich in the book is represented by Napoleon, an allegory to Stalin; and Snowball, who represents Trotsky. In chapter three we can see an increasing dispute between Napoleon and Snowball. Squealer is a clear and well represented allegory to propaganda. He persuades the other animals and tries to convince them that the pigs are now some kind of leaders and that they have to do all what they say. In chapter four the rebelion has extended to other farms, this represents the outbreak of revolutions from the Russian Revolution, one example is the French Revolution. Propaganda is really used in this chapter of Animal Farm, i'm going to write about political propaganda and it's effects.

Propganda is a form of communication that is aimed to iunfluence a community towards something or someone. In real-life we use propaganda for political purposes. In all the electoral campaigns from all the countries.

This kind of proganda has great effects on people. One of the main ones is to show people and make them believe in the proposals that the politicians have so, in that way ey can get the number of votes that they need for whoever makes the propaganda does win the elections.

In what ways does Major uses rhetoric in his speech and what impact does this have on the animals?

Major uses rhetoric in many ways during his speech. Rhetoric is the language that is used to persuade. He uses rhetorical devices to persuade his audience, in this case, the animals in the farm. In his speech we can found rhetorical question, tricolon, hyperbole and contrast.

Major uses rhetorical question to make the animals reflect and see they're reality. "Are they our friends or our enemies."p.6

He also uses tricolon. "The soil of England is fertile, it's climate is good, it is capable of affording food"p.4. Tricolon gives three examples that support an idea at the same time.

Hyperbole is another rhetorical device that major uses in his speech. "...those of us who are capable of it are forced to work to the last atom of our strenght"p.4. Major uses the hyperbole to exagerate the work that the animals do, so they can realize that they do work a lot and have no reward.

The las rhetorical device founded in Major's speech is contrast. "All men are enemies. All animals are comrades"p.6. In this quote we can see that Major contrasts humans with animals. This device also make the animals think in their situation and gives them two points of view but giving like preference to only one.

Animal Farm, an introduction

My favourite character of Animal Farm is a really old animal. It is Old Major (Willingdon Beauty). He is twelve years old and has had over four hundred children. He is a very respectulf and respected animal, he is like the leader of the farm. His relationship with the other animals is really good. He is always listened and also listens others. He is a very clever and demanding animal. He gives good speeches, he was the one who gave the speech. Old Major is my favourite character because he has a really strong personality, which is transmited by his speech. I also like him a lot because he is some kind of leader to the other animals, i like that.

The Destruction of Sennacherib
by Lord Byron

Our task was to record us while reading a poem. It was really funny.

The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold,
And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold;
And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea,
When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee.

   Like the leaves of the forest when Summer is green,
That host with their banners at sunset were seen:
Like the leaves of the forest when Autumn hath blown,
That host on the morrow lay withered and strown.

   For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast,
And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed;
And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!

   And there lay the steed with his nostril all wide,
But through it there rolled not the breath of his pride;
And the foam of his gasping lay white on the turf,
And cold as the spray of the rock-beating surf.

   And there lay the rider distorted and pale,
With the dew on his brow, and the rust on his mail:
And the tents were all silent, the banners alone,
The lances unlifted, the trumpet unblown.

   And the widows of Ashur are loud in their wail,
And the idols are broke in the temple of Baal;
And the might of the Gentile, unsmote by the sword,
Hath melted like snow in the glance of the Lord!

  2. I really like your work, it sound great, well done. But I think that as a group you need to improve your pronunciation, otherwise it sounds great and I think that with more organization and practice you can do it perfect. I love it <3

  3. I agree with the above comments, there is some nice choral work and interesting choices of changes of voice.

    Unfortunately, the sound quality is very distracting and makes some of your work difficult to hear properly. Your group have also been constricted by the rhythm of the lines, rather than using the punctuation and imagery guide the rhythm of your speech.

    This is a good attempt with room for improvement in the future.

  4. Lovely introduction to 'Animal Farm' and your favourite character. You have picked out some good character information from the text. Next time, describe your personal impressions of the characters and action. Use your knowledge of the allegory to make inferences about the characters and situations and what they might mean in a broader context.

    Good start.

  5. This week's work has let you down. The task was to use P.E.A to analyse Major's use of rhetoric. You have listed examples of rhetorical devices from the speech, but you have made no attempt to analyse why Major used them and what effect they had on his audience. I hope to see more effort in your next post.

  6. Again, you have missed the point of this week's homework. Please start to read the homework instructions carefully.

    This week the task was to find a current news item which relates to events, themes or characters in 'Animal Farm'; put a link to the news article in your blog, and then write a paragraph explaining to your readers the similarities between your chosen article and the story 'Animal Farm'. See a good example here: http://rodrig092.blogspot.com/2013/08/animal-farm-in-2013.html
    If you want to have another try tomorrow I will grade a second attempt.

  7. You do not appear to have taken the opportunity to revise your work to include the aspects specified for the homework. I have graded the work above.

  8. This is a great article. Your title is punchy and clearly shows the sympathies of the writer. You have created a balanced account of events and used subtly biased language to make the readers sympathetic to the animals' cause.

    Language note: You must check your work carefully for spelling / typing mistakes and grammatical errors. There are a number of careless mistakes in your article which could be avoided by a final proofread before publishing.

  9. Your work is really improving. Your analysis of Napoleon's use of power to control the animals is focused and clear. The use of short paragraphs for your ideas is very suitable for a blog post and makes each point concise and readable.

    Now, develop your analysis. Quotes should come near the top of a paragraph, and must always be followed by an explanation of what they mean, and how you interpret them to support your point.

    Notes: paragraph 2 - missing verb. Propaganda (noun) is information - it can be spread or disseminated by Squealer.
